Motivation The job has been designed in such a way that the employee feels passionate, motivated, excited and compelled to do it (Landy and Conte, 2010). Milestones have been established for every branding project and on the accomplishment of those milestones, monetary rewards as well as recognition are conferred. Apart from these project based incentives, a competent job holder will be given timely raises, bonuses and job security. Efficiency Efficiency in the job will be achieved through proper resource allocation and the job holder will be provided with adequate resources such as money, physical resources, human resources and time to complete the branding projects efficiently (Durai and Pravin, 2010). Health Safety The job of Branding Manager has not been designed in a way that would hamper the health or safety of the employee. The job holder would not be required to work for long hours and if any overtime is required then he/she would be compensated appropriately (Armstrong, 2010). The work environment, lighting, heating, seating conditions are all suitable. Mental Capacity The position of Branding Manager is designed keeping in mind the mental capacity and ability required for such job. The duties and responsibilities are such that are relevant to a person working on this position. Recruitment Strategies Several companies choose to fill the vacant positions from within. This involves promoting a deserving employee to a higher post or carrying out job rotations. However, in the case of Singapore Airlines, the vacancy of Branding Manager will be filled through external recruitment. There are several strategies for external recruitment enumerated below: Advertising This is one of the most common methods of recruitment. It involves posting advertisements in the specialized section of newspapers. A clearly worded and well thought out advertisement enables the interested applicants to screen themselves out thereby only targeting the required candidates (OMeara, 2013). Recruitment Agencies - There are several HR consultant agencies offering recruitment services these days. These agencies usually have specialization in a particular domain of expertise. For instance, some specialize in blue collar jobs while some specialize in white collar jobs. They generally have a rich supply of candidates in their books (Taylor, 2010). Networking This may offer an immensely useful source of information about potential candidates and this is particularly advantageous if the HR personnel have an extensive network of contacts. Contacts may encompass unions, associations, suppliers, friends, clubs or even academic and business acquaintances (Gardner, 2005). The Internet Online recruitment entails both applicants or employers or both going on the internet for seeking an employment relationship. The turnaround time for a reaction to a job posted on the internet can as minimum as 15 minutes from the actual posting (Allen, Mahto and Otondo, 2007). The internet is comparatively cheaper and provides extensive coverage as well as instant continuous access. However, its main drawback is problems in attracting the correct candidate because of the huge data available on the Internet (Headworth, 2015). For hiring the Branding Manager, the recruitment strategy of employment agencies will be utilized. The company will register with one of the premium agencies in Singapore. This agency will be asked to do the preliminary hiring for the company. It will then advertise the position through a clearly articulated message, sort through all the applications and then provide the HR department with a shortlist of suitable candidates (as per the person specification and job description) who are ready to be interviewed (Breaugh, 2009). An agency that specializes in hiring white collar professionals will be contacted for the said purpose. In return the agency will be paid a fee on the successful placement of the candidate. The terms of the fees will be decided and roughly it may equate to 5-15% of the yearly starting salary of the placed candidate. Though this is a bit expensive means to hire, but it saves a lot of resources and time. Moreover, reputable agencies give assurance, like, if the new recruit leaves before completing a pre-determined tenure, which in the case of Singapore Airlines is 12 months, the employment agency will hire a new candidate for free or will give back the initial fee (Taylor, 2010). Conclusion Hence, it can be concluded that job analysis and job design will help in streamlining the human efforts in Singapore Airlines search for a Branding Manager and will ensure the attainment of best possible output. Both job design and analysis are critical components of strategic solution, as they define how the work force will be used in the company. The ultimate objective of both these functions is to augment organizational performance. Through a sound job analysis, the HR manager at Singapore Airlines will be able to outline specific responsibilities, tasks and skills that the new recruit need to perform and possess respectively to maximize their contribution to their employers success (Landy and Conte, 2010). Job analysis assists with measuring whether the individual goals and performances are consistent with the companys objectives or not. These functions help in determining the evaluation criteria, performance standards as well as individual output. This eventually adds value to t he company because employees perform as per the standards set as their performance appraisals are based on achieving at par levels. Job analysis also determines the type of worker required to do a specific task like in the present case the Branding Manager. Recruitment of the correct person eventually adds value to the company in form of distinctive human capital (Armstrong, 2010). Selecting the most optimal recruitment strategy is highly critical for any organization because the hiring and selection is a very time and resource consuming job. The correct mix of recruitment strategies ensures the selection of right person with optimum utilization of resources and minimum wastage of efforts thereby adding significant value to the organization. Separate Peace Essays (2068 words) - Phillips Exeter Academy

Separate Peace Dealing with enemies has been a problem ever since the beginning of time. In A Separate Peace by John Knowels, the value of dealing with your feelings and dealing with your enemies is shown by Gene Forester, a student in Devon during World War 2 dealing with few human enemies, but his emotions create a nemesis far greater than any human enemy. "I never killed anybody," Gene had commented later in his adulthood, "And I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at Devon; I killed my enemy there." Now about the enemies that Gene had put into his own life. Gene had a best friend, his name was Finny, they were roommates and did many activities together. Finny was never the source, but the core of most of Gene's feelings, both good and bad. First, one of the biggest problems that Gene had, that is jealousy. Gene was jealous of Finny's confidency, openness, modesty, superb athletic abilities, his natural leadership skills, his ability to deal with stress easily, his care free attitude, his people skills and, of course, his good looks. Early in the story Finny demonstrated his openness by when asked for his height, he said 5 foot, 8 inches, while Gene replies 5 foot, 9 inches. Finny pointed out that they were the same height and you shouldn't be ashamed to tell anybody your real height. Later that day, they skip dinner to go swimming in the river, by Finny's choice, and are asked where they were on return. Finny quickly replied that they were swimming in the river, something that is forbidden, right down to the last detail, and they got away with it. Gene said that the rules are very bent during the summer session, but it was actually Finny's people skills that had kept them out of trouble. Finny was very bold, as Gene many a time wished he was, on one occasion Finny wore a bright pink shirt "symbolizing the first U.S. bombing in Europe. Gene called him a "faerie" but really envied him. Later Finny wore the school tie as a belt and when questioned he claimed that it represented "Devon in the war." Gene was hopeingly awaiting a scolding for Finny, but again, he got in no trouble. Another day the two were walking and came across a plaque near the pool claiming that A. Hopkins Parker held the record for swimming across the pool the fastest, Finny took one look at and thought he could beat it, so without any practice at all he plunged into the pool, Gene timed him and he beat it, just like that. Gene wanted to get an official scorekeeper so Finny could get a plaque but Finny said "no, in my head I know that I did it, that's all that matters," thus demonstrating that Finny is very modest and secure. The next day Gene and Finny went to the beach, which wasn't allowed. This was done at Finny's request, Gene was going to study for a test, but he felt that he can't say no to Finny so hey went. At the beach Gene noticed a lot of people looking at them, he knew they were looking at Finny because of his well built body and his golden tan but Finny said that they were looking at Gene. Before they return, Finny calls Gene his "best pal" and Gene wanted to reply, but he wasn't sure about it himself and he also has a hard time expressing his true feelings. That was his first enemy, now the next, anger. Gene's anger isn't too bad alone but when jealousy and anger are lurking in the same domain, they prove to be a deadly combination. Gene was angry about such things as Finny's ability not to get in trouble, and Gene's unwillingness to say "no" to Finny, but the real war started when he got the idea that because Finny has low grades, he wanted to lower Gene's grades as well so he will better than Gene. Gene believed that Finny was trying to wreak his studies with games, an organization they had formed-the Secret Suicide Society, going to the beach and all this "you're my best friend stuff." Other than that, there is little anger between Finny and Gene. One day, Finny wanted Gene to come jump off a high limb into the river

E-commerce law in European Union - Essay Example To quote the report, most retailers "still seem to operate on the assumption that the internal market is partitioned along national lines".1 Doubts over the enforcement of e-commerce laws among the member countries of the European Union have been expressed by stakeholder groups like the European Digital Rights (EDRi). Concerns regarding the future of electronic commerce in the E.U. internal market have arisen because of insufficient surety of legal action by the governments, institutions and private parties. It is said that lack of certainty resulting in legal action may undermine human rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of information, freedom of thought, freedom of creation, the right to education, as well as the rights to privacy and the protection of personal data.2 2 â€Å"EU E-Commerce Law May Undermine Human Rights, Group Says†. Johann Pachelbel's Canon Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Johann Pachelbel's Canon - Essay Example Pachelbel in his youth was taught music by Heinrich Schwemmer. He was quick to grasp the gist of music and his talent was eminent. He portrayed outstanding music abilities in his early days and this encouraged his early teachers to nature the talent in him. He went to primary school at the Auditorio Aegediano and in St. Lorenz Hauptschule in his birth town of Nuremberg. He was a quick learner and performed brilliantly in school. He later on went to the University of Altdorf where his family was unable to raise the school fees for his education midway in his course and he was compelled to quite school. On sporting his talent and academic ability, he was offered an opportunity for further education where he joined Gymnasium Poeticum which is in Regensburg where he studied on a scholarship. He did not disappoint as he performed exceptionally well and was among the top students. He was in fact offered an admission in the school to be a surplus in the number of students as the school had already filled its maximum capacity number. Pachelbel got married twice with the first marriage ending by a plague which killed his wife and only son at the time. It was a very tragic event which put him under a lot of stress and even threatened his career in the music industry. Barbara Gabler died in October 1683 only two years after their marriage and leaving him a devastated man. Pachelbel got married to Judith Drommer ten months after the death of his first family as a way to reinvent himself and fill the gap that was so deeply intrenched into his heart. In this second marriage this time he bore two girls and five boys. This was seen as a way to keep an insurance for himself just in case such an event as that of the plague took place again then he would have someone dear to him to live with and to gain emotional support from when he needed it. He fortunately lived a happy life and got to be celebrated widely for his music. He finally died on the 3rd of March 1706 while working a s a church organist and was laid to rest at the St. Rochus Cemetery in his birth place, Nuremberg, Germany. II. Historical Information Pachelbel lived during the historic era of the reign of the Habsburg empire and the Baroque era. It was an extensive empire at the time (17th Century) which had its capital at Vienna. The empire had most of its culture and its taste of music being influenced by predominantly by the Italian culture and this in a major way influenced the music of Pachelbel to have a flare of Italian touch. He grew very famous in the empire and was so fond of the capital Vienna that he spend more than one quarter of his entire life living and practicing music in Vienna. The musicians during the time of Pachelbel made a living almost entirely out of music alone. There were quite a number of job opportunities for anyone who was good in music. Pachelbel is one of the veteran musicians of the time and he spent his life making a career out of music till his death at the age of 53. In fact at some point in time Pachelbel was offered jobs but he declined. He already had a job at a church where they considered him a very important part of the society and his departure will would leave a huge gap in the community. This led to the church offering him an increase of salary and he opted to stay on in the church for another four years. Musicians at the time worked as court organists, church organists, tutors in

Expansionary Economic Policy Essay Example for Free

Expansionary Economic Policy Essay In economic terms, a recession is defined as a general slowdown in economic activity. In an effort to move the economy out of a recession, the government would implement expansionary economic policies. One action the government would take would include conducting expansionary fiscal policy. The other action taken would be conducting expansionary monetary policy. Both of these actions would have an effect on such things as money supply, interest rates, spending, aggregate demand, GDP, and employment. Expansionary fiscal policy consists of change in government expenditures, or taxes, in order in influence the level of economic activity, inflation, and economic growth (Amacher Pate, 2012). Expansionary fiscal policy is when taxes are cut and government spending is increased. Lower taxes will increase disposable income. The increase in disposable income will lead to higher levels of consumer spending. In theory the more money that consumers spend, the higher the chance for economic growth. Tax cuts will also lead to an increase in aggregate demand. Aggregate demand is the total demand for goods and services is the economy. As stated earlier, a tax cut will increase people’s disposable income therefore increasing the amount of money available for consumption. The increase in consumption would increase the demand for goods and services. This in turn increases GDP (gross domestic product). GDP is the value of the total output that the economy produces in a given time period (Amacher Pate, 2012). The higher the demand that there is for goods and services, the need for employees to produces these goods and services are needed. This increases employment. Lower tax cuts will also increase people’s incentive to work. With lower taxes comes more money to spend from their paychecks. There are arguments, from economists and politicians, regarding the effect tax cuts in fiscal policy will have on the economy. Some economists argue that the effect of future tax cuts will lead consumers to change their saving (David, 2008). Some economists feel that people will save the value of the tax cut that they receive today in order to pay those future taxes (David, 2008). Some politicians feel that tax cuts will have no effect because changes in private saving will offset changes in government saving. Tax cuts allow the government to increase spending on special programs and health care. The increased revenue allows a government to borrow less money or lower government debt. This will result in lower interest rates which are beneficial to everyone involved. What is important to look at though is what the increased spending by the government is going towards. Those against increased government spending say that the government spends foolishly. In order to stimulate the economy, the increased government spending needs to go towards those things that are beneficial to its citizens. An example of this would be if the unemployment rate is high and the government spends on hiring workers to fix the roads, this would help to decrease the high unemployment rate. According to a global poll taken in 2009, an average of three in five citizens (60%) supports the increased spending by the government to help stimulate the economy (Global Poll Shows Support for Increased Government Spending and Regulation, 2009). Strongest support is for investments such as renewable energy, green technology, and giving financial support for troubled industries and companies. Expansionary monetary policy is when a central bank, for example the Federal Reserve Bank (the Fed), uses its tools to stimulate the economy. Often times this means lowering the Fed funds rate in order to increase the money supply. What this does is it increases liquidity which gives the banks more money to lend. The result of this would be lower interest rates. The Fed’s use three tools when conducting monetary policy; open market operations, the discount rate, and reserve requirements (How the Fed Guides Monetary Policy, 2011). The most common tool used is the open market operations tool. This is used to buy or sell government bonds on the open market. It is used to manipulate the short term interest rate and the supply of base money in an economy. The discount rate is the interest rate a Reserve Bank charges eligible financial institutions to borrow funds on a short term basis (How the Fed Guides Monetary Policy, 2011). A higher discount rate can indicate a more restrictive policy, while a lower rate can be used to signal a more expansive policy (How the Fed Guides Monetary Policy, 2011). All financial institutions, whether or not they are members of the Federal Reserve System, must set aside a percentage of their deposits as reserves to be held either as cash or as reserve account balances. The Federal Reserve sets these requirements for all commercial banks, savings banks, savings and loans, credit unions, and U. S. branches and agencies of foreign banks (How the Fed Guides Monetary Policy, 2011). This tool is the least common used of the three. There are two kinds of assets that banks can count toward meeting the required reserve. The first is valued cash such as currency and coins. The second, and largest, consists of funds the bank has on deposit with its direct Reserve Bank (Amacher Pate, 2012). A change in the reserve ratio is rarely made and when a change is made it usually is in small amounts. A reduction in the ratio usually has a double impact on the money supply. First, it converts some required reserves into excess reserves. Second, it increases the size of the deposit multiplier (Amacher Pate, 2012). An increase in the reserve ratio works in the opposite way. The interest rate the Fed charges a bank is the discount rate (Amacher Pate, 2012). The higher the rate, the less likely banks are to borrow. The discount rate acts more as a function than a tool in monetary policy. An increase in the discount rate indicates to banks that the Fed wants cool down the economy by reducing bank lending. An increase indicates the Fed’s desire to stimulate the economy. The Fed most likely would increase the discount rate when conducting monetary policy because by doing so, it would keep banks from using this source before turning to other less expensive alternatives. Whether or not the Fed wants to buy or sell government securities depends on this; whether or not they want the funds rate to rise or fall. If the fed wants the funds rate to fall, it will buy government securities from a bank. What happens is that the Fed then pays for securities by increasing the bank’s reserves (frbsf. org, 2011). The banks will then have more reserves than it wants. Then the Fed can lend these unwanted reserves to another bank. If the Fed wants the funds rate to rise, then the opposite will happen. It will sell the government securities. The fed receives payment in reserves from the banks, which will lower the supply of reserves in the banking system (frbsf. org, 2011). To tighten money and credit in the economy, the Federal Open market Committee (FOMC), directs the New York trading desk to sell government securities, collecting payments from banks by reducing their reserve accounts. With less money in these reserve accounts, banks will have less money to lend, interest rates will increase and consumer spending will decrease. This will have a negative effect on the economy. Some may argue that there can be too much expansionary monetary policy. If the Fed stimulates the economy too much, that could trigger inflation. Inflation is when prices rise above the 2 inflation target that the Fed has set. What happens is that consumers will start buying immediately in order to avoid higher prices in the future. This raises the demand which will cause businesses to have to hire more workers to produce the product. The additional income will allow consumers to spend more which in turn will stimulate more demand. This will cause businesses to start raising prices because they know that they will not be able to produce enough. They will also raise prices because they know that their costs will rise as well. This is what will cause an increase in inflation. During a recession, the government will implement expansionary economic policies. One type of policy conducted is fiscal policy. This policy consists of changes in taxes and government spending in order to stimulate the economy. The other is monetary policy, which is when a central bank, such as the Fed, uses tools to stimulate the economy. Both of these policies have been and will be used in the future to stabilize the economy.

Innovation Process of Amazon Kindle Essays -- Business, Online Store

INTRODUCTION Amazon.com entered the UK market as Amazon.co.uk on October 1998 by acquiring the site previously operated by Bookpages Ltd. The company began as US online book store in 1994. The retailer soon became very successful in the new market as its primary offer included over 1.4 million book titles, comprehensible search tools, secure transaction, direct shipping and also high discounts on thousands of popular books (Amazon, 1998). During 17 years of its presence on the market, Amazon offers various products and services including books, DVD, jewellery, electronics, furniture, , clothes, cosmetics, digital downloads, website development etc. (Datamonitor, 2010). Amazon significantly extended its product offer and currently is one of the leading online retailers in the world with several international websites and customers in over 200 countries. Amazon Kindle is one of Amazon’s recent remarkable products. Kindle is a portable device which allows user to read, download, and store e-books due to its wireless connection and internal memory (Amazon, 2009). The first version was originally launched in US market in 2007 and achieved success as sold out in five and a half hours (Patel, 2007). Later, Kindle has been through several upgraded versions; Kindle original, Kindle 2, Kindle DX, Kindle DX Graphite, and the most recent version Kindle 3 with improvements mostly on the shape, contrast, memory capacity, and operating system. Earlier versions of Kindle had been criticized for its aesthetic and user interface issues. Reviews from customers and gadget experts motivated Amazon to further improve the product. Kindle 3 was officially launched in July 2010. This new generation of Kindle is available in two options of connectivity;... ...cessfully established its position as market leader. This should be maintained with continuous and substantial improvement. Currently Kindle 3 operates in grayscale mode and it is potential for the company to develop the color version in the future. One thing need to be improved is its pricing strategies. The company should avoid reducing price on every new version as it could affect customer expectation and product value perception. Customer-oriented pricing strategies can be used in the future to establish Kindle standard price. This could be achieved by understand how customer use the product, the product benefit for customers, and estimate all relevant cost and compare how the product benefits offset these costs (Shiu, 2011b). This is an important point to consider in order to achieve sustainable position as the leading innovative e-book reader in the market.

Experience †¢Our life experiences teach us that when you stop trying to belong you realize that you have always belonged. †¢We search for a place to belong, not realizing that it is our perceptions and attitudes and not the place that allow us to belong. Notions of identity (Ideas) When your cultural identity is marginalized you can feel displaced and dislocated, and believe that you don’t belong to your culture or the dominant culture. †¢Our search for who we are is fueled by a need to find a place in the world where we belong. Relationships †¢The need to belong to a group of community shapes our behavior, attitudes and actions. †¢An individual has the potential to damage relationships and ensure that others do not belong. †¢When humanity experiences a strong (spiritual) connection to a place the notion of belonging is strength – ENED and ENRICHED. †¢When our relationship with a place is shaped by a narrow and biased view of the world, our notion of belonging can be questionable. Acceptance †¢The basic human need to be accepted and belong can cloud our judgments and direct our actions. Understanding †¢When we begin to understand the forces that drive us to belong we develop empathy for others and personal insight. Essay Introduction Belonging is about connections made with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. A sense of belong is a fundamental need. As Kofi Annan says, â€Å" We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race†. The oxford dictionary defines the word belong as be a member, fit in a specified environment, not be out of place.’ The need to ‘fit in’, to belong with others is common to all humanity, crossing all geographical and cultural boundaries. The need to ‘fit in’ to belong with others is common to all humanity crossing all geographical and cultural boundaries. Perceptions of belonging are shaped within personal, cultural, historical and social contexts. ‘The Fringe Dwellers’ directed by Bruce Beresford deals with an indigenous Australian family whose struggles for acceptance and identities are portrayed through its main characters. Bruce Beresford has used film techniques†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ to show the different aspects of belonging. These characters are depicted as people striving to attain an identity, but the barriers to their acceptance are quite strong. The different aspects of belonging/ not belonging presented in the text are place/land, Topic sentence – about place and land and sense of belonging, Land/Place/Home is an important part, the members of Comeaway family belong to each other and stick together in their extended family in WA. They live in a dilapidated house on the out skit of town. Mrs comeaway is the centre or the family. Trilby has great ambition and plans and wants to move into the council house. The thinks that if she moves into the new house she will be able to like any other white person. The family feels a sesnse of belonging to that place after they moved out to their new home. Trilby says, it’s all new’’. ’A kitchen, an electric stove and running water!† She feels a sense of belonging to that place and does not want her relatives to stay there. The close connection to a place is significant to every individual. Having a home, feeing secure and comfortable is vital. Tribly feels out of place due to her great ambitions and goes away in the end searching for a place of her dreams – to the city to get her great white Australian dream materialized. Some of the shots are extreme long shots and some long shots which show the background. The body language of main characters tells a lot more than words. Trilby and Noonah are a searching for a place to belong Skippy’s return to his tribal birth place indicates that he wants to belong where her belonged. The second aspect of belonging is ‘notions of identity/acceptance. An individual’s sense of identity reflects his/her belief or aspirations about where they belong and feel accepted. When our cultural identity is marginalized we feel displaced and we believe that we do not belong to our culture or group. Our search for who we are is fuelled by a need to find a place where we belong. The sharing of common values creates a bond that allows individuals to feel they won’t be misunderstood or rejected. Often the process off searching and finding one’s identity is a difficult process and can change overtime. In Fringe Dwellers, Noonah, Moolies, Bertie, Joe, are all aware of their identity they never question it except for Tribly – Comeaway school girl. Trilby is full of grand hopes and dreams and questions her identity through body language. There is a difference between knowing your sense of identity and searching for your identity. Trilby constantly encourages her family to be independent and live just like the whites. The director showing the close up shot of Trilby’s face in front of the mirror indicate Trilby’s insecurity about her identity. Again the point of view shot of Tribly looking intently at the window (with the scenes of the city) shows. Her dreams and aspirations. This was the route she looks. Forwards to walk on as it is a pathway to get accepted by the wilder community.

Themes, Content and the Power of Music in Iron Man When the World Is Crumbling

Themes, Content and the Power of Music in Iron Man When the World Is Crumbling When it was announced that the Marvel Studios was going to adapt one of the audience’s most beloved stories into a major feature length movie, the audience was hyped. Everyone wanted to see Iron Man on the big screen, and, one must admit, Jon Favreau did not upset people’s expectations.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Themes, Content and the Power of Music in Iron Man: When the World Is Crumbling specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Iron Man was huge not only because of the special effects, but also because of its likeable characters, the story arc of the lead hero, Tony Stark, and the complex ethical issues that the movie handled. While the key theme of the movie clearly revolves around Tony Stark, the millionaire, Favreau also renders a range of ethical and philosophical issues. Among the key ones, a man’s role in society should be named. Although Tony Stark seems to have all the power and money th at a man may dream of, his story arc is clearly geared towards recognizing his place under the sun and changing from an arrogant snob into a hero in every meaning of the word. Personal evolution, however, is not the only issue that the movie touches upon; Favreau offers his own take on political problems, including civil–military cooperation, terrorism in the Middle East, weapon trade, etc. Though widely considered misleading, the given interpretation of the current political issues is rather engaging and thought provoking. Adapting a comic book into a movie is not an easy task for two reasons, the first one being the necessity to keep the original content intact, at the same time fitting several volumes into ninety minutes of running time, and the second one being the need to translate a comic book story, that is, a primarily visual narration, into a complex virtual world, in which visual and acoustic elements are combined. Therefore, unlike in a comic book, in a movie, soun dtracks play a huge role, which can be illustrated by taking the Iron Man soundtracks as an example.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More There is no secret that taking the original story of the Iron Man without changing a few elements to add more credibility to it would have meant to shrink the range of the movie audience to the amount of the Iron Man diehard fans. The movie clearly needed a more mature character and a more serious atmosphere to it to look less goofy and at the same time retain its unique style. Seeing how very little could be added to the story to make the idea of a man building a suit for flying more realistic, it was decided to use music to make people believe that the characters are real and, more importantly, want them to be real. The results were stunning, with literally every single lighthearted moment balanced out with a heavy soundtrack. While the movie admittedly is too smart to take itself too seriously, the music adds the weight that the original story lacks to appeal to an average viewer, seeing how the number of soundtracks amounts to nineteen in the original release, and to twenty-seven in a DVD with extra scenes and director cuts. The soundtracks are remarkably versatile; instead of recycling one and the same concept by putting the emphasis on action scenes, the movie allows for a number of quiet and, honestly, very sincere moments. For instance, when Colonel Rhodes saves Stark’s life and the latter returns home, the first few seconds of the soundtrack actually land on a very peculiar note, leaving the feeling that the lead character experiences doubt and, perhaps, even fear. The first few notes of the â€Å"Vacation’s over,† therefore, open a set of ethical questions to the audience, making it clear that the leading character doubts whether the Iron Man should resume his rescue mission or let the state defense forces do their job. Not only does the theme make the character more humane and, therefore, more complex, but also raises the question whether becoming a vigilante is actually an ethically sober thing to do.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Themes, Content and the Power of Music in Iron Man: When the World Is Crumbling specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More â€Å"Vacation’s over† feels like the character is actually starting to breathe and live on his own; however, the very next second, a powerful orchestral motif makes it clear that the movie does not have the time to explore the character’s doubts – the reluctantly heroic chords show that a major blockbuster did not dare to venture into the depth of a complex drama. Nevertheless, the music does render the movie’s major themes successfully – it is just that the themes could have been explored in a much better way. To Ramin Djawadi’s credit, he does manage to address the major theme of the movie, the conflict of a rebel in the high class society, in a very impressive way. â€Å"Institutionalized,† with its aggressive beat and intense lyrics manages to render the emotions of a rebel who is restricted by the social boundaries: Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesnt work out the way I wanted to. I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it doesnt work out the way I wanted to. (Marco Crdenas Soler 0:17–0:33) The seriousness of the issue raised in the movie, however, is often reduced by adding more laid-back music elements. For instance, the â€Å"Back in black/I hit the sack/It’s been too long I’m glad to be back† line from AC/DC’s â€Å"Back in Black† (Iron Man 1:04–1:07) is supposed to mark the first stage of the character’s evolution and define him as a self-assured million-dollar playboy. As the movie progresses and the character evolves, however, the soundtrack is becoming heavier, still lending Tony Stark a unique air of nonchalance and affording being ironic towards the latter, as the â€Å"Are Those Bullet Holes?† (Iron Man 126:01) shows. Speaking of music as a background for the characters to interact in, a number of movie directors seem to forget about the necessity to let the key film scenes breathe. As much as a movie needs music to create a specific mood, it is still required to have a couple of silent moments to let the atmosphere build up and to prepare the audience for another twist of the plot.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Luckily, Iron Man is one of the few movies that actually invites the audience to sink into its atmosphere and offers a decent payoff by using music as the means to put the emphasis on the climax. As the movie approaches the end credits and the leading character takes the floor at the conference, there is no soundtrack, and the entire scene seems rather ordinary and even mundane part of a life of a public person. However, after Tony Stark confesses to be the Iron Man, the next scene explodes with music, doubtlessly leaving a big impact. The music, therefore, serves as the means to render the characters’ emotions, as well as to create a specific atmosphere, like music should. PSAT Test Dates 2017

PSAT Test Dates 2017 SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Attention, 2017 juniors! Do you know when you’ll be taking the PSAT? Do you know the best way to prepare for the test? This guide is for anyone planning to take the PSAT in the fall of 2017. We have the predicted PSAT test dates, along with some key study tips. To start, let’s discuss what you need to know about how your school will administer the PSAT. How Will Your High School Administer the PSAT? Unlike the SAT or ACT, you don’t get to choose when you take the PSAT. Instead, your school administers the PSAT on one date in the fall. All juniors automatically take the PSAT, while younger students can request to take it if they want the experience. College Board gives schools three options for PSAT test dates, a primary test date, an alternate test date, and a Saturday test date. The majority of schools choose the primary test date, which falls on a Wednesday. Your school will only administer the PSAT on its one selected test date. College Board hasn’t released the exact 2017 PSAT test dates yet, but we can predict the dates based on previous years. Read on for the predictedPSAT test dates in 2017. With the PSAT, you don't get to choose your test date. What Are the 2017 PSAT Test Dates? Every year the primary PSAT test date falls on a Wednesday in mid-October. The alternate test date will be offered two weeks later, while the Saturday test date will fall within a few days ofthe primary test date. Here are the officialPSAT test dates 2017: Primary date: Wednesday, October 11 Alternate Date: Wednesday,October 25 Saturday Date: Saturday, October 14 Since your school only administers the PSAT once, you should try your hardest to be there. Of course, you can’t help it if you come down with the flu or have a family emergency. If you miss your PSAT test date for whatever reason, can you still take the test? When the days start to cool and the leaves change color, PSAT season is upon you. What If You Miss the 2017 PSAT Test Date? Even though your school only administers the PSAT once, it is possible to retake the test if you’re absent on test day. If you miss the PSAT, then you’ll have to contact the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) with a written request to take it by March 1. Here’s what the NMSC website says about scheduling a makeup PSAT: â€Å"The student or a school official must write to NMSC as soon as possible after the PSAT/NMSQT administration to request information about procedures for entry to NMSC competitions by alternate testing. The earlier NMSC receives the written request, the greater the student’s opportunities for meeting alternate entry requirements. To be considered, a request must be postmarked no later than March 1 following the PSAT/NMSQT administration that was missed. NMSC will provide alternate entry materials including an entry form that requires the signature of a school official.† While you can schedule a retest if you miss the PSAT, you really only need to take this step if you’re aiming for National Merit distinction or scholarships. If you’re not, then you could instead simply take a timed PSAT practice test on your own. While you won’t get the official testing experience, you can still take and score the test, analyze your results, and reflect on your performance to help you prep for the SAT. For students who are able to take the PSAT on its official test date, how long will they have to wait to get their scores? If you miss the PSAT, you probably only need to schedule a makeup test if you're aiming for top, National Merit-qualifying scores. When Will You Get PSAT Scores? PSAT scores willcome out a couple of months after you take the test, sometime in mid-December. You’ll be able to access them online via your College Board account. School counselors should have access to the scores one day earlier than students. Your school should also distribute paper score reports around the end of the month. Beside your total scores, what feedback will you see on your PSAT score report? What Will Your PSAT Score Report Look Like? Your PSAT score report will tell you how you scored on the entire test, as well as how you scored on each section. Your total scores will fall between 320 and 1520. This scale, by the way, is 80 points lower than the SAT scale to account for the fact that the PSAT is a slightly easier test. You’ll also get a score between 160 and 760 for Evidence-based Reading and Writing, and a score between 160 and 760 for math. Your test performance will be further broken down with three section scores between 8 and 38, one each for Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. Finally, you’ll get a Selection Index score between 48 and 228. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses this Selection Index to name Commended Students and Semifinalists. Each state has a different Selection Index cutoff to qualify. We estimate that the average state cutoff to qualify as National Merit Semifinalist will be 214. Whether you’re aiming for National Merit or getting ready for the PSAT and SAT, you should take time to study for the PSAT. Read on for some essential PSAT prep tips. Your PSAT score report slices through your results toreveal all the layers of your test performance. How to Prep for the PSAT No one should go into the PSAT without knowing what to expect. There are lots of available practice materials that will help you learn about the test and get some experience with PSAT questions. The following seventips will help guide your prep for the PSAT. We also have in-depth articles that illuminate every aspect of the test, plus give some key test-taking and time management strategies to help you do your best. Your first step in PSAT studying is simply familiarizing yourself with the content, format, and scoring of the test. Want to improve your PSAT score by 150 points? We have the industry's leading PSAT prep program. Built by Harvard grads and SAT full scorers, the program learns your strengths and weaknesses through advanced statistics, then customizes your prep program to you so that you get the most effective prep possible. Check out our 5-day free trial today: #1: Familiarize Yourself With the Test First things first, set aside some time tolearn all about the PSAT. Learn about how the test is structured, how much time you have for each section, and when you get breaks. Figure out what skills are tested in Reading, what grammar rules you need to know for Writing, and what the difference is between the Math No Calculator and Math With Calculator sections (besides, of course, whether or not you can use a calculator). As you learn, take notes on theskills and concepts you feel confident about and which ones need review. Keep track of the areas where you’ll need to spend the most time studying. You can use these notes to design a study plan that targets your weak areas and fills in any gaps in knowledge. Your first step in preparing for the PSAT is learning all about the PSAT. In other words, you should make the PSAT your new best friend. #2: Make a Study Schedule To meet your goals on the PSAT, you need to design a study schedule customized to you. You should think about how much time you have before the PSAT, and how much of that time you can realistically commit to test prep. Ideally, you can set aside the same time each week so that your PSAT prep becomes part of your routine. Just a few hours of prep a week can add up to dozens or even hundreds of hours if you start early enough. Take time to design a schedule, write it down, and stick to it. By developing a consistent habit of PSAT prep, you’ll see significantprogress over time. #3: Take a Timed Practice Test When you start studying, you should sit down and take a full PSAT practice test. Find a quiet environment, time yourself, and score your test. By simulating the test day experience, you can get a sense of your current scoring level. Then you can use this practice test to diagnose your strengths and weaknesses as a test-taker. Take time to figure out your section scores and pinpoint your weaknesses. Where do you see the most room for improvement? By taking a practice test at the beginning, you can figure out where you need to put in the most work to see improvement. Take timed practice tests to get a sense of the pacing of the PSAT. With enough practice, you'll manage to stay afloat despitethe strict time limits. #4: Analyze Your Results Once you’ve scored your test, you should go back through and circle all of the questions that you got wrong or where unsure about. Look for patterns in questions that tripped you up. Perhaps you need to work on time management in the Reading section. Maybe you need to review geometry concepts and memorize more formulas. Think deeply about the reasons you got a question wrong. Were you missing some core knowledge, or did you make a careless error because you were rushing? Memorizing grammar rules won’t help your Writing score if what you really need is better time management strategies. Getting to the root of your issues will help you address them directly and effectively. #5: Review Core Concepts While strategy is important on the PSAT, you also need to possess certain core knowledge to do well on it. You’ll need to understand specific rules of grammar, certain literary terms, key math formulas, and concepts of algebra and geometry. Make sure your PSAT study materials break down each section into its component concepts. After reviewing a concept, you should answer relevant practice questions to reinforce your understanding. If you come across a concept that you haven’t learned yet in school, you might seek help from a peer or teacher or try to learn it on your own with PSAT study materials. Filling in any gaps in knowledge is especially key if you’re aiming for top scores. Even if the PSAT calls itself a skills-based, rather than content-basedtest, it still requires that you've memorized some facts and figures. #6: Get Strategic Unfortunately, even academically excellent students aren’t guaranteed a high score on the PSAT without a solid understanding of test-taking strategy. The PSAT is a fast-paced test that requires deft time management. By practicing with timed tests, you’ll be able to get more and more efficient and less prone to careless errors. You shouldalso try outspecificstrategies, like process of elimination or speed-reading passages, to improve your speed while maintaining accuracy. #7: Practice, Practice, Practice Becoming a good PSAT-taker is a learned skill, just like writing or playing the guitar. You can’t expect to get great scores the first time you take a practice test. Rather, you’ll get better and better the more you practice. Ideally, you can start several months before your test date and commit one to three hours to PSAT prep each week. As you get closer to the test, you can ramp up the time commitment, if possible. However, you’ll already have accumulated many study hours, so you won’t have to panic and cram at the last minute.By the time the PSAT rolls around, all the skills you’ve developed will kick in and carry you across the finish line of your PSAT goals. Now that you have a sense of when you’ll take the PSAT and how you can start preparing for it, let’s go over the key points you should remember about this important test. Just as youcan't expect to know how to play the guitar without any practice, you also shouldn't expect to ace the PSAT without some serious prep work. PSAT Test Dates 2017: Key Points If you’ll be a junior in 2017, then you’ll be taking the PSAT in the fall. In all likelihood, you’ll take the PSAT on a Wednesday in mid-October.Our projected 2017 PSAT dates are Wednesday, October 18, Wednesday, November 1, andSaturday, October 15. The PSAT is a unique test, probably unlike othertests you take in school. To achieve your target scores, you should take time to review material and try out test-taking strategies. With enough practice, you might qualify for National Merit distinction and scholarships. Regardless of whether or not you make this competitive cutoff, you’ll still benefit from prepping for the PSAT. The test is extremely similar to the SAT, so any prep you do now will help you when you take the college admissions test. Taking the PSAT is a skill that you can learn and improve with practice. The more effort you put in beforehand, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel when test day rolls around. What’s Next? Are you aiming for top scores on the PSAT?
